DATA PRIVACY DAY
2008
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the internet and the capabilities of modern technology cause data
privacy issues to figure prominently in many people’s lives — at work, in
their relations with the government and public authorities, in the health
field, in e-commerce transactions, and online generally; and
WHEREAS, many individuals are unaware of data protection and of privacy
laws generally and of specific steps that can be taken to help ensure the
privacy of personal information online; and
WHEREAS, Data Privacy Day constitutes an international collaboration and a
nationwide and statewide effort to raise awareness about data privacy and the
protection of personal information on the internet; and
WHEREAS, government officials from the United States and Europe, privacy
professionals, academics, legal scholars, representatives of international
businesses, and others with an interest in data privacy issues are coming
together on this date to further the discussion about the transatlantic
perspective on data privacy and protection; and
WHEREAS, privacy professionals and educators are being encouraged to take
the time to discuss data privacy and protection issues with teens in high
schools across the country; and
WHEREAS, the celebration of Data Privacy Day will encourage more people,
both in North Carolina and nationwide, to be aware of data privacy concerns and
to take steps to protect their personal information online;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North
Carolina, do hereby proclaim January 28, 2008, as “DATA PRIVACY DAY” in North
Carolina and call upon our citizens and interested groups to observe the day
with appropriate ceremonies and activities that promote awareness of data
privacy.
MICHAEL F. EASLEY
